The Internet Revolution

Connecting the World

The internet is the most transformative communication technology since the invention of the printing press, connecting billions of people and devices across the globe in a network that has fundamentally altered how humans share information, conduct commerce, form communities, and participate in civic life. What began as a Cold War-era research project to create a communication system that could survive a nuclear attack has evolved into a global digital infrastructure that underpins the modern economy and shapes virtually every aspect of contemporary culture and society.

The history of the internet can be traced through five major eras, each defined by a transformative technological or cultural shift. The ARPANET era established the foundational networking protocols and demonstrated that geographically distributed computers could communicate reliably over packet-switched networks. The World Wide Web era made the internet accessible to ordinary users through graphical browsers and hyperlinked documents, triggering explosive growth in both users and content. The social era transformed the web from a publishing medium into a participatory platform where billions of users create, share, and interact with content and each other. The mobile era liberated the internet from desktop computers, making it a constant companion accessible from the pocket of nearly every person on the planet.

The most recent era, still in its early stages, explores decentralized technologies including blockchain, distributed storage, and peer-to-peer protocols that aim to redistribute the power and ownership that have become concentrated in a handful of large technology platforms during the social and mobile eras. Each of these transitions has created enormous economic value, disrupted established industries, raised new ethical and regulatory challenges, and reshaped the daily experience of billions of people. Together they form a narrative that is still unfolding, as the internet continues to evolve in ways that its original creators could never have imagined.
